Bina Nusantara (Binus) is a one of largest private university in Indonesia. On November 9, 1987, a merger between AMIK Bina Nusantara and STMIK Bina Nusantara took place. The institution conducted Diploma (D-3) and Undergraduate (S-1) programs. An accreditation status of ‘Disamakan’ or ‘Equalized’ for all majors and levels was earned on March 18, 1992. On the next year, STMIK Bina Nusantara opened the first Masters (S-2) Program in Information System Management in Indonesia. The program was officially listed on May 10, 1993.​

After going through years of perseverance and hard work, Bina Nusantara University (Universitas Bina Nusantara or UBINUS) was officially listed and established on August 8, 1996. STMIK Bina Nusantara was then merged into Bina Nusantara University on December 20, 1998. At that time, UBINUS has Faculty of Computer Science (Fakultas Ilmu Komputer), Faculty of Economy (Fakultas Ekonomi), Faculty of Engineering (Fakultas Teknik), Faculty of Literature (Fakultas Sastra), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Fakultas MIPA) and Masters (S-2) Program in Information System Management.​

The Challenge

1. The database need high performance & improve utilization

Covid-19 Pandemic has changed the activity segment, how we work, even how we get study. Those are for the education institution on how to bring the technology and get adaptation for new model to educate the student.​

2. Need to scalable database

Before that, Bina Nusantara University already have a E-Learning technology on their institution for some of their students, yet when pandemic struck, they were forced to bring their e-learning platform on the cloud so that the students can access and learn from home.

Implementing The Right Technology

With increased user on their E-Learning platform, Microsoft Azure offer AzureSQL for MySQL for their application database. With that services, customer get high availability and automatic update & patching database, who will simplify the customer to running their application without big effort to managed the database server.​

What we can do to start their transformation? We start how their existing on-premises environment and assess the risk when we migrate the environment to Microsoft Azure especially for the database.​

And for the migration we use Azure Data Migration (DMS) to migrate the database.

Result

As an education institution, they are successful to implement the e-learning program for all students when forced to study from home.

They can manage the higher traffic on the system without issue owing to the environment on Azure.
